Deferment, Leave, and Time-Off

Unable to attend

If there are circumstances that require you to miss the full duration of your scheduled Operationally Ready National Service (ORNS) activity, apply for deferment via Manage Call-Ups & Manning on the NS Portal.

Your application for deferment is subject to approval and based on the operational demands of your unit. Depending on the nature of your call-up (i.e. In-Camp Training (ICT)/ Make-Up Training (MUT)), you could be scheduled for MUT.

Failure to attend

If you fail to attend your call-up, you will be called back for investigation and may be subjected to disciplinary action, such as being charged for Absence Without Official Leave (AWOL).

Compassionate leave and time-off

If you have circumstances of an urgent and compassionate nature that require you to miss a portion of your call-up, you may consider requesting for compassionate leave or time-off instead of applying for deferment.

You might still be liable for MUT if you failed to attain the required proficiency standard set for the training. Anyone who makes a false claim for compassionate leave or time-off may be subjected to disciplinary action. Do approach your immediate commander for advice.

No-Pay Leave

For an HK call-up, you could request for 1 to 2 days of No Pay Leave to attend to urgent matters at your workplace, rather than apply for deferment. Do approach your immediate commander for advice and to find out more about the process.

Your unit’s Commanding Officer will exercise his discretion in the approval of compassionate leave, time-off or no-pay leave. Each case will be considered based on its own merits and could depend on your unit’s operational demand.
