Employers understand and appreciate rigours of NS training

“I didn’t expect the training to be so tough!” – an employer shared after watching NS Medic Specialists perform Intravenous (IV) drips on each other as part of their proficiency refresher training. The visit to SAF Medical Training Institute (SMTI) on 21 Nov 2017, hosted by the Chief Army Medical Officer, COL (DR) Lo Hong Yee, was jointly organised by SMTI and the National Service Directorate (NSD) for employers to better understand and enhance awareness of how the SAF trains its NS medics during their In-Camp Training (ICT).

With most of her understanding of the SAF gleaned from the mass media’s portrayal, it was an eye opener for one of the employers Ms Fanny Foo, who is the Head Development & Operations, Brahm Centre to appreciate the rigorous training that our NS Medical Specialists had to go through.  Acknowledging the importance for our NSmen to focus on their in-camp training without distractions from their work commitments, Ms Fanny indicated that she will support her co-workers when they are called back for ICT. For instance, she will ensure that they do not get flooded with emails or messages about work.

“I think more people should be aware of  NS training, (which is about) practical life skills.” – Ms Fanny Foo, Head Development & Operations, Brahm Centre

About 100 employers participated in the visit. They were  shown how technology was being harnessed for training to enhance realism, and also given opportunities for hands-on experiences.

Reflecting upon what they saw at the visit, many employers took the initiative to pen down encouragement and appreciation for our NSmen who need to constantly juggle between their civilian life and fulfilling their NS duties.

Support from employers for their NSmen employees is essential for them to be able to focus on their training during ICT and achieve the right balance between work, family as well as their NS commitments. To find out more about NS or examples on how to be a supportive employer, please email us at NSOutreach@defence.gov.sg.

We also encourage supportive employers to come on board NS Mark, a national accreditation scheme to recognise businesses and employers who have been supportive of NS and Total Defence.  Find out more about NS Mark today at www.NSmark.sg.
